And in today’s ever-competitive labour market, it is imperative that every smart job seeker masters this one art. Usually, when most young graduates hear about having a résumé, what they often think about is a document that simply contains their profile.

Well, in case no one ever told you; ‘That is an erroneous view!’

On the scale of important credentials that help you secure a job; the résumé should be considered a major document. For this reason, you should make it very compelling in a way that the recruiter can’t wait to meet you. That is the ultimate function of a good résumé.

Never in history has there been a time as aggressively competing as the job space of this millennium. One job advert gets an average of 200 résumés vying for the role, hence, it is the survival of the fittest. Need I say that in this context, it will be the survival of which résumé stands out!

Now, it doesn’t matter how qualified you think you because trust me, there are tons of many other applicants just as qualified. This is not to intimidate you, but in a pool of equally qualified people, doing the extra can make you unique. Of course, that uniqueness is what gets the attention of the recruiters.

Now, since the résumé is one of the preliminary documents that influence if you get dropped or picked in the job race, your best bet should be to give it your best shot. Nonetheless, before we dive right into this, you should know that there are fundamentally two types of skills, namely – soft skills and hard skills. While soft skills are infused in a person’s character, hard skills are abilities acquired through learning such as digital marketing skills, language, accounting, mathematical, computing or programming skills, among others. Having the right skill sets will go a long way to giving your résumé the needed boost as well as making it memorable to the recruiter.

I’d advise at this juncture that you make sure to weave into your résumé the skills that match the job requirements. Once this is checked, focus on your soft skills as studies have shown that most employers are interested in a candidate’s soft skills especially the ones that show your problem-solving, leadership, self-reliance, team-building abilities and a list of like attributes that show that you are versatile (

Let your résumé tell how you are good with organising and communicating excellently with others in a way that boosts results. Most employers would often prefer affable workers than the ‘lone ranger’ that does his work only.

Every organisation is out to solve a given problem. Your résumé needs to showcase your ability to think up solutions to existing challenges.

Show how flexible and adaptable you are especially in the face of an unforeseen contingency. In the same vein, show only a few recruiters are interested in ‘one-way-switch’ kind of candidates.

Look at it this way: if you don’t believe in yourself, in your unique blend of skills, education, and abilities, why should a prospective employer? It will do you no good to list in skills (don’t list skills in your résumé, do this instead: show contexts you applied the skills ( you cannot defend as that will only put you up for failure.
